How to uninstall Avast Antivirus
On Windows 10 and 11, antivirus software can be uninstalled much like any other program, but there are a few extra steps and precautions to help keep your PC safe.
In the modern Windows era, dedicated uninstallation tools are largely a thing of the past. So to uninstall Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security on Windows 10 or Windows 11, you’ll usually just need to use the Add/Remove Programs interface.
However, like most real-time antivirus software, Avast, as well as Windows, will double-check to make sure that it’s really you who issued the uninstall command. This is because some malware tried to disable or remove any antivirus software it finds, so as to better get a foothold on your system.
In case you’re switching to a different antivirus suite, Avast also offers a Passive Mode, which can also be enabled via its settings. This hands back system-wide real-time malware defence to Microsoft Defender (or a third-party suite, should you install one), but keeps Avast around as an exclusive on-demand malware scanner so you have an extra detection engine to check suspicious files with.
And just in case anything goes wrong, Avast provides avastclear, an emergency tool that can fully remove the remnant of failed or unresponsive uninstallations of Avast.

Step
9Skip (or fill in) the survey
Avast will now remove itself and prompt you to fill in an uninstallation survey or agree to a post-uninstall interview. You can’t skip this step or cancel uninstallation at this point. Opt for the survey and press next to pass through without interacting.
Step
10Reboot
The uninstaller will notify you when it’s finished. Click Restart computer to reboot and complete file removal.
Step
11Make sure Microsoft Defender has taken over
The final step in antivirus installation on Windows is to ensure that you’re now protected by the OS’s built-in defences. Type Windows Security into the search box on the taskbar, click on the Windows Security app, then the Virus & threat protection tab. Your Virus & threat protection settings should say “No action needed”.
If Microsoft Defender hasn’t activated when you reboot, or if parts of Avast – that aren’t stand-alone tools such as Avast SecureLine VPN – are still present, then you may need to turn to Avast’s emergency uninstallation clean-up tool and follow our guide to repairing a broken Avast uninstallation.

Troubleshooting
This will put Microsoft Defender back in charge of real-time malware defence, but keep Avast installed for on-demand scanning.
No, Microsoft Defender provides entire adequate protection against malware.
Avast has a wide range of security software, much of which exists independently of the main antivirus suite. If you want to remove Avast Secure Browser or SecureLine VPN, just search for them in Windows’ Apps settings and click uninstall.
Reboot your PC and this should be removed. If an empty directory remains after this, you can safely delete it. If other traces of the software remain, follow my guide to running avastclear.

If, despite all the security measures you take, your computer gets infected by a virus or worm, it is necessary to disinfect your system somehow. While for some viruses the only 100% realiable method of disinfection is restoring your system from backups, for many common infections this is not really necessary and the virus/worm can be removed quite easily.
Removing the infection
The worms often schedule themselves to be run automatically when you start your operating system; some of them even register themselves to be run when any other application is started. Removing such a worm is not as simple as deleting it - when you just delete the worm file, your operating system might not be able to start your applications (such as Explorer) any more.
So, in order to properly remove the worm from your computer, it is often necessary to make additional fixes in your system registry, delete the links from your Startup Folder etc. Here the avast! Virus Cleaner comes - it will find and remove selected worms from your computer, as well as fix the registry and startup items to make sure your system will work correctly after the disinfection.
Many worms - when activated - create additional working files on your hard disk. Even though these files alone are harmless, they are useless and they should not be there. When avast! Virus Cleaner detects and removes a known worm from your computer, its working/temporary files are removed as well. The same applies for worm-specific registry entries etc.

Troubleshooting Avast Antivirus products
If your Avast Antivirus application features or components aren’t working properly, or your application isn’t updating as you expect, you can repair your Avast installation, or check out our Avast Support site for general troubleshooting tips.
In some cases, you may need to completely uninstall and reinstall your Avast Antivirus product. You can uninstall Avast via Apps & Features settings on Windows 10, with a dedicated Avast uninstall utility — Avast Clear — or, via Command Prompt.
This article contains instructions on how to uninstall Avast Antivirus using Avast Clear, then how to uninstall Avast Antivirus using the Command Prompt if Avast Clear isn’t successful.
Avast Clear can uninstall these current Avast Antivirus programs from your Windows PC:
Uninstall Avast Antivirus using our Avast removal tool: Avast Clear
Avast Clear uses a separate window to bypass the normal Avast uninstaller setup. This ensures Avast removal even if you receive the message that the “setup is already running.” If you can’t uninstall using the standard method, using this dedicated Avast removal tool ensures that Avast can still be uninstalled.
Here’s how to uninstall Avast on Windows 10 using Avast Clear:
- Download the avastclear.exe uninstall utility and save it to a familiar folder on your PC (saved to Downloads folder by default).
- Right-click the file and select Run as administrator. If prompted for permissions, click Yes.
- Click Yes in the Avast Clear dialog to start your PC in Safe Mode.
- Select the folder containing your Avast program files, and select the Avast Antivirus product you want to uninstall (the location and product are usually detected automatically). Click Uninstall.
- Restart your computer.
For instructions on how to uninstall Avast with Avast Clear on Windows 7 and Windows 8, check out our Avast Support guide.
How to uninstall Avast while “setup is already running”
You can’t uninstall Avast in the standard way while the setup is already running — you need to stop the setup first, then uninstall via Avast Clear. The “setup is already running” dialog pops up if you try to uninstall Avast while virus definitions are updating in the background, or if you already started the removal process.
Here’s how to stop the Avast setup and force Avast to uninstall:
- Open Avast Antivirus and go to Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting. Untick Enable Self-Defense.
- Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open Task Manager.
- Select Avast Antivirus and click End task.
- You can now uninstall Avast Antivirus using Avast Clear.
Uninstall Avast using Command Prompt
You can uninstall Avast using the Command Prompt if the Avast Clear uninstaller doesn’t work. We only recommend trying this method if uninstalling Avast with Avast Clear isn’t successful.
Here’s how to uninstall Avast Antivirus using the Command Prompt on Windows 10:
- Open File Explorer and go to c:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\setup\, then open the file Stats.ini.
- Scroll to Common, and type SilentUninstallEnabled=1. Save the changes.
- Type cmd (Command Prompt) in the Start menu search bar, then click Run as administrator.
- Type cd c:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\setup\ and hit Enter.
- Type instup.exe /instop:uninstall /silent and hit Enter.
Tip: If uninstalling via Command Prompt doesn’t work, disable Self-Defense settings in Avast Antivirus via Settings > General > Troubleshooting, and untick Enable Self-Defense. Then, try to uninstall via Command Prompt again.

Fantastic Customer Service!
I was traumatized from System Mechanic/iolo customer service and thankfully they gave me a refund for my entire account so I can switch. They tried to take control of my computer through remote session, would not let me move my mouse to cancel the session and tried to sell me $240 for several years of live tech. Would not listen to me when I said no several times. I was done. Found out avast had everything an antivirus software needs and decided to buy it. I had some trouble setting up a feature so I called customer service. They are fantastic. They didn’t even try to sell me another product and helped me fix my issue. I am buying everything they have on all my devices.
Thank you very much for using our app on multiple devices. We will be doing our best to protect them all. David* Avast
Pretty good security at a fair price
Wow, best thing since sliced bread! And I have a bridge to sell, in San Francisco!
Actually, I’ve used Avast for years - many years free version, but as cell phones are everywhere and my family is oblivious to all the threats it was time to invest. Avast has saved me in the past, I’ve managed to avoid re-installation of several versions of windows due to malware and key-loggers caught by Avast. Haven’t experienced an issue with the family cell phones as yet - I’m counting on Avast protecting them before we have an issue.
Always been good protection, it seems they just keep improving!
A significant irritant that drops my rating two stars.
Yes, it is a bit annoying it says my router isn’t secure enough to thwart hackers. But I can turn that notification off.
However while traveling and trying to upload photos via WiFi from my camera to my iPad I would get 3-5 photos into the transfer and everything shut down, sometimes it was before or after the first photo. When trying to transfer nearly 300 photos taken in a day having to restart the camera and the app every 1-4 times gets tiring.
Finally uninstalled Avast after fiddling with setting, coming to conclusion it was pointing to Avast breaking the connection, I uninstalled it and finished loading the remaining 160+ photos non-stop from the camera.
Why Avast doesn’t provide the user with some way of switching the protection off for certain unsecured connections (the camera’s WiFi literally requires the iPad to be within 6’)
I am willing to take my chances of nefarious characters trying to break in my camera WiFi within that sphere of 6’ in all directions.
Provide us with some ability to toggle it off on certain circumstances. Don’t make us uninstall then reinstall the app when we’ve completed dealing with an unsecured network that we control and have no ability to change its security.
I can assure you that your comments have been passed to the development team to see if there are any changes/improvements that we can make to address the issues that you have raised. Avast

Avast virus removal had some trouble setting up a feature so I called customer service.
And I have a bridge to sell, avast virus removal, in San Francisco!
Avast
