Photoshop has been an industry-standard in photo editing for decades. Despite the numerous Photoshop alternatives springing up, there&#;s nothing that comes close to its power or mobile app support (the Photoshop CC iPad app is simply incredible!)
Both professionals and amateurs look to purchase Photoshop for any sort of advanced photo manipulation, from combining different images as layers, to extensive retouching, warping and color editing.

If you decide to do what I do and pay monthly for Photoshop as a subscription product, there are a couple of options for you:
1) Photography Plan or Single App
Here&#;s the first confusing part of Adobe&#;s subscription plans that you need to be aware of, especially if you assume it might be cheaper to just get Photoshop and not Lightroom.
Simply put, Adobe has two low-cost subscription options: the Photography plan, and the Single App plan. However, the Photography plan is around $10/mo. while the Single Apps are around $21/mo each (latest, up to date pricing here).
This means that if you try to get Photoshop without Lightroom, you&#;ll end up paying about $11/mo. more!
Obviously, the best option is to just get Adobe&#;s Photography plan &#; even if you only need Photoshop, (or only need Lightroom), it&#;s the best value option.
2) Creative Cloud &#; All Apps
If you&#;re a multi-discipline creative or production company that needs a whole arsenal of Adobe applications, the full suite of Creative Cloud apps offers it all, with the Photoshop price included in a complete plan.

Pros of Buying Photoshop CC as a Subscription
Some photographers may be critical of Adobe&#;s subscription model because their revenue has increased dramatically in the years since they first debuted the CC subscription plan.
However, the main benefits of having a subscription plan, whether you have the basic Photography plan or the complete All Apps plan, is that you&#;ll always have the latest version of the apps, and the fact that Adobe releases major updates at a fast rate.
1) You get the fastest, most-optimized version of Photoshop
This is not critical to everyone, but it is indeed very convenient to always have the latest, greatest, and usually the fastest version of Photoshop.
If you&#;ve ever used Photoshop CS6 or any of the previous releases of standalone Photoshop, you&#;ll know that it would crash from time to time, and things would tend to slow down.
I&#;ve found that with Photoshop CC, things seem a lot snappier in general, probably because of the frequent updates that serve to keep everything well optimized.
2) You get all the latest Photoshop Features
3) All of the most recent cameras are supported
If you shoot raw, (RAW, NEF, CR2, ARW&#;) then before you even get your images into Photoshop, you must convert them from their raw format. So, you&#;ll need to use either Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw, to process your raw photos. You can also use a free cr2 to jpg image converter tool.
Adobe Camera Raw, which is also the stand-alone application known as Adobe Bridge, comes with Photoshop, even if you buy Photoshop without Lightroom.
Unfortunately, Camera Raw (and Lightroom) need to be updated every time a new camera comes out, in order for the new raw file format to be supported.
This means that you won&#;t be able to buy an old version of Photoshop and use it to process all your raw photos. You&#;ll need to get a CC subscription or use Adobe&#;s DNG converter to make your new raw files compatible with your old raw converter.
4) You can take full advantage of Mobile Editing
While the app itself will be free to use regardless of whether you&#;re a subscriber or not, the full syncing capabilities will not.
In other words, if you subscribe to one of the Adobe CC Photoshop plans, you&#;ll be able to start off editing on your desktop, then pick up where you left off on your mobile device.
5) Your files will be backed up in the cloud
Since the Photography Plan includes 20GB of free cloud storage, all your precious Photoshop (and Lightroom CC) files are automatically backed up online.
If you&#;re like me and don&#;t want to have to remember to make manual backups, this feature alone is worth the cost of a monthly subscription.
The 20 GB of cloud storage can also be upgraded to 10 TB for power-users.
Cons of Buying Photoshop CC as a Subscription
The only real con of purchasing Photoshop CC is the cost involved. Many people simply have an issue with adding yet another monthly subscription to their already subscription-filled lives.
However, if you were the type of person who used to buy each one of the major updates to Photoshop, the cost actually evens out in the long run.
Instead of paying a few hundred dollars every few years for the latest version of Adobe Photoshop, you pay a few dollars every month.
One thing to note, however, is that if you ever stop paying for your subscription, you&#;ll no longer have access to the application itself &#; if you ever want to process old photos again, you&#;ll have to keep paying for the CC subscription.
2. Buy Photoshop Elements
Adobe Photoshop Elements () may look very different from the professional version of Photoshop, but the basic functionality is the same.

Photoshop Elements is an up-to-date, &#;lite&#; version of Photoshop (see latest price here).
If all you need to do with your images are simple tasks such as layers, brushes, or other basic adjustments, this is the most affordable way to still get (most of) the Photoshop environment, with a one-time payment.
Pros of Buying Photoshop Elements
Buying a stand-alone, perpetual license of Photoshop comes with two simple, major benefits.
1) It’s Cheaper (in the long run) than a Subscription
If you only need the basic editing features of Photoshop, why pay a monthly fee? Photoshop Elements is great value for money, and a one-off payment.
2) It will never Expire
With a subscription model, your access ends when your subscription ends. If you want to be able to perform random edits to photos in the future without paying for a subscription or re-subscribing every time you want to edit photos, you&#;ll need to buy a standalone version of Photoshop.
With Photoshop Elements, you pay once and own it forever.
Cons of Buying Photoshop Elements
1) You won’t have all the latest features
If all you need to do is basic layer masking and other types of simple edits, then you might not need the latest features in the current CC version of Photoshop.
However, all photographers progress in their skill level over time, and eventually, they often realize that they need a certain advanced feature. Whether it&#;s for portrait retouching or nightscape photography compositing, you may eventually want the current version of Photoshop CC.
2) No Lightroom Classic CC
If you buy Photoshop Elements, your only way to edit raw photos will be through Bridge/Camera Raw, which is admittedly rather clunky.
You&#;ll be missing out on Lightroom Classic CC&#;s desktop and mobile applications, which offer a great cross-device workflow for performing all manner of edits.
Also, being able to cull, organize and even edit photos on a mobile or tablet (with Lr CC Mobile) is incredibly liberating, not to mention a lot of fun!
3) No Cloud Backup
With Photoshop Elements, all your files are stored locally on your computer &#; there&#;s no &#;safety net&#; of a cloud backup, nor cloud syncing, like there is with a Photoshop monthly subscription.
Obviously, you can make manual backups to DropBox, or just to external hard-drives yourself, but having to think about this each time may impede your workflow.

Adobe&#;s switch from a one-time, own-it-for-life software business to a subscription-based business model annoyed a lot of people.

At first, I must admit I was afraid that Adobe wouldn&#;t provide updates as regularly as they promised, and that the improvements wouldn&#;t be very exciting. Thankfully though, I was wrong &#; everything that&#;s been released or updated since I became a paying subscriber in early has been useful.

However, there is no function of convenient and full-fledged retouching. You will be able only to edit skin imperfections, and some more, otherwise there is the color correction and applying the filters.
The program is more like Photoshop Express, not a full-fledged Photoshop, but it is free, and this is an advantage.

Even if you know the Photoshop desktop app, you may not realise that there are quite a few apps called Photoshop these days, including the Photoshop Express and Photoshop Camera mobile apps for editing images on your phone or tablet. Express is also available for Windows, via the Microsoft Store. Both apps are free, so if your needs are fairly straightforward and undemanding, they might be the ticket. Keep reading to find out more about them.
However, you’re probably reading this article because Photoshop is now a subscription service. So even if you were willing to pay for the software, you now have to pay continually. Photoshop is now part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription which is aimed at creative pros and is too expensive for most consumers.
But whether you’re a pro or home user and really want to get Photoshop without the high cost, there are options. And obvious one is to sign up for Adobe’s Creative Cloud trial. That’s a short-term solution,
If a week-long trial doesn’t work for you, and the mobile apps don’t have the tools you need, you can get discounts on Creative Cloud subscriptions. They’re available to students and teachers, who get an all-year discount that makes the steep price much cheaper, but Adobe also has deals where anyone can get Photoshop for less.
Last, but certainly not least, you can still buy Photoshop as a standalone piece of software that doesn’t force you to subscribe. It’s called Photoshop Elements, is relatively affordable and is aimed at home users. Scroll down to find out more about it.

1. Use Adobe Photoshop for free
You candownload a free 7-day trial of Photoshop CC. This is the full version of the software with no restrictions. You’ll have to pay after the trial ends but Adobe typically offers a day window (from purchase) to cancel and get a full refund.
PC users will need Windows 10 or 11 and at least 8GB RAM (though 16GB is recommended). It’s also compatible with Windows 10 ARM devices (such as the Surface Pro X) with at least 8GB RAM and 4GB of GPU RAM.
Mac users will need macOS version (Mojave) or later, though macOS (Big Sur) and macOS (Catalina) are recommended. Minimum RAM requirements are 8GB , though 16GB is again recommended.

2. Get Photoshop Express free on Android, iOS & Windows
If you need only basic photo-editing tools, Adobe offers a free app called Photoshop Express (formerly Spark) which is available from the Apple App Store, Google Play and Microsoft Store. That means you can also use it on your PC or laptop
For a free app, it’s pretty good, though it bears no resemblance to the full version of Photoshop at all. It’s much more like other quick photo-editing apps such as Snapseed and the one built into Google Photos. That means you can add filters, crop, transform, adjust perspective, adjust (brightness, contrast, saturation, and more), add masks and more. You can see all Photoshop Express features here.
What you cannot do is edit specific portions of images, except when using the red-eye reduction and spot healing tools. There’s no image resizing (but you can specify the output resolution to nearest pixels of width) nor any support for layers.
As it’s free, and you need only sign up for an Adobe account to use it, you may as well give it a whirl and see if it’ll do what you need it to.
3. Get Photoshop Camera free on Android/iOS
The Photoshop Camera app allows you to add all sorts of effects and filters directly in-camera – allowing you to effectively “Photoshop” your image as you capture it! It’s also free to use.
4. Get Photoshop Elements
It isn’t free but Elements is hands-down the best option for those who want ‘proper’ Photoshop without the subscription costs of Creative Cloud.
Elements is a more user-friendly version of Photoshop CC but still has many of the popular features and tools. In fact, for home users there’s more power on offer here than you probably need, and you certainly won’t feel constrained in terms of the tools on offer (unless you regularly use full Photoshop’s Curves tool: that’s one tool not present in Elements.)
You can do a lot more than in Photoshop Express, such as building up images with various layers, resizing backgrounds without affecting the people in a photo, replacing backgrounds entirely or erasing unwanted objects. It’s simple to select objects – even people – and there are 60 Guided Edits which walk you through many of the things you might want to do to a photo including those we’ve just mentioned as well as adjusting colours, lots of artistic effects and turning a photo into a meme.
Elements also lets you create great slideshows and has a useful organiser so you can keep track of all your photos.
The Expert mode looks and works much like Photoshop CC, which is ideal for those already used to the full version.

5. Get Adobe Photoshop discounts on Amazon
Amazon has the entire Adobe CC available for £ (for one year), which saves you £ from the standard price.
Amazon also sells the Photoshop and Premiere Elements bundle for £ We’ve previously seen the bundle as low as £, but that’s no longer sold.
We currently can’t see any equivalent deals in the US.
Adobe occasionally has its own sales with 20% off, though we’ve previously seen up to 40% off.
6. Get a discount on Photoshop if you’re a student or teacher
While Adobe doesn’t offer a student discount on Photoshop alone, students and teachers can get a 65% discount on the full Creative Cloud bundle (60% in the US).
